Soka Gakkai Malaysia Hosts Culture Show in Kuala Lumpur
On July 26, 2008, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Kuala Lumpur sponsored a culture show at SJK Batang Kali multipurpose hall in Ulu, Selangor, attended by around 1,800 residents. Titled "Melam Mesra Muhibah (An Evening of Harmony) 2008," the show served to promote goodwill and cooperation in the community. Guest of honor State Assemblyman Wong Koon Mun joined other community leaders from Batang Kali at the event.
Some 300 performers from community groups, schools and SGM participated in a program that included Dikir Barat, a traditional singing style of the region celebrating the rice harvest season, a Chinese orchestra, choral singing, modern dances and gymnastic feats.
During the event, SGM donated RM71,000 (approx. US$20,000) to ten local schools and computers to two schools.
Teachers Pual Nurul and Puan Azura of the Dikir Barat group from SMK Kuala Kubu Bharu, one of the schools receiving a donation, said they were honored to be invited to perform. They also felt that their students engaged in meaningful exchanges with SGM members leading up to the culture show.
