Soka Gakkai Malaysia Joins in Celebrations for Malaysia's Golden Jubilee

On August 31, 2007, Malaysia commemorated its 50th anniversary of independence. Golden jubilee celebrations were held throughout the country leading up to the anniversary. Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) members participated in an event at Stadium Merdeka (Independence) in Kuala Lumpur. The national gala, highlighting the different eras of Malaysia's history, was attended by His Majesty Tuanku Mizan Zainal Abidin, the current monarch of Malaysia, Her Majesty Tuanku Nur Zahirah and other officials, together with 30,000 citizens. Upon the request of the Malaysian government, 2,000 SGM youth division members of SGI-Malaysia (SGM) joined some 8,000 other performers, presenting spectacular gymnastic feats, calisthenic formations and a gracefully choreographed modern dance. In addition, over 300 SGM youth volunteers worked as support staff at the event.

SGM members also participated in and supported independence day events held in Selangor, Sabah, Penang, Pahang, Negeri Sembilan, Kedah, Melaka, and Perak states.

For over 20 years, SGM has been invited to perform at official national sports and cultural events such as Malaysia Fest, the SEA Games, Visit Malaysia Year and Citrawarna. In 1998, over 5,000 SGM members performed "human graphics' at the Kuala Lumpur 16th Commonwealth Games.
