Soka Gakkai Malaysia Participates in Kuching City Day Parade

Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) members, together with 42 other units, helped kick off the 19th Kuching City Day month-long celebrations that began with a grand parade on August 4, 2007, in Kuching, Sarawak State. Some 100 local SGM members participated in the event at the invitation of Kuching City.

Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang officiated at the opening ceremony at Padang Merdeka, which began with a minute of silence in remembrance of Kuching City South Mayor Chong Ted Tsiung who passed away August 3, just several days prior to the launch of festivities.

Some 2,571 dancers in dazzling costumes--all proud Kuching citizens--participated in the 2007 celebration, gaining a place in the Malaysia Book of Records as the largest gathering of dancers for a Tandak Melayu Sarawak event.

The Kuching City Day parade commenced at the Jubilee Ground in Padungan and ended at Padang Merdeka. Eight giant puppets towered above the SGM contingent, dancing gracefully together with the adults and youth who performed a variety of traditional Sarawak folk dances.
