Charity Cultural Extravaganza in Terengganu, Malaysia

On June 1-2, 2007, Soka Gakkai Malaysia (SGM) Terengganu Branch and the Terengganu State Department of Culture, Arts and Heritage cosponsored a charity show, titled "Malam Budidaya 2007," at Auditorium Taman Budaya Negeri Terengganu-Kuala Ibai. Malam Budidaya, showcasing ethnic dances highlighting the rich cultural diversity of Malaysian society, also commemorated Visit Malaysia Year 2007 and Malaysia's 50th Independence Day.

YB Dato' Haji Che Mat bin Jusoh, speaker of the Terengganu State Assembly, was the guest of honor at the event. Also in attendance were Ghazali bin Bidin, director of the Terengganu State Department of Culture, Arts and Heritage; SGM General Director Choo Kong Fei; and SGM Terengganu Branch Chair Khor Wan Khoon. More than 450 people attended the event, which raised RM25,000.00 from ticket sales. The funds were distributed among ten charitable organizations, an orphanage and schools in Terengganu.

Multicultural welcome dance

Show highlights included a traditional Malay singing form called Dikir Barat, performed by SGM Kelantan members, heart-stopping gymnastics feats and a lively children's dance. All the performers were volunteers from SGM branches in Terengganu, Kelantan and Pahang. In addition to the performers, some 200 SGM volunteers also supported the event behind the scenes.
