SGI-Mexico Participates in International Conference on Global Issues in Cuba Commemorating José Martí's 152 Birthday

From October 25 to 27, over 170 delegates from 32 countries, including SGI-Mexico Youth Division Chief Daisuke Inoue, attended an international conference titled "With and for the Good of All" at the Havana Conference Center, Cuba, to pursue resolutions to global issues based on the legacy of Cuba's national hero, José Martí(1853-1895). The conference, sponsored by the MartíProgram Office in Cuba and supported by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), commemorated the celebrated hero's 152nd birth anniversary. Participants sought to discover solutions to contemporary issues and actions for the betterment of the world. MartíProgram Office Director Armando Hart Dávalos, also president of the José MartíCultural Society, spoke on "José Martíand the Dialogue of Civilizations," while Francisco Piñon, general secretary of the Organization of Ibero-American States (OIS), addressed the increase in poverty among Cuban citizens. Mr. Inoue introduced SGI President Daisaku Ikeda's ideals, such as his call for developing a culture of dialogue for the sake of establishing lasting peace. Rafael Polanco Brahojos, periodical editor in chief at Sociedad Cultural José Martí(José Martí Cultural Society), stated that Dr. Ikeda has widely promulgated the Cuban hero's ideals and philosophy through Dialogue sobre José Martíel Apóstol de Cuba (published in Japanese in 2001 and in Spanish in 2002) based on dialogues between SGI President Daisaku Ikeda and Cintio Vitier, director of the Center of José MartíStudies in Cuba.
