Stories and reflections on the Buddhist approach to life
Tokyo, Jun 2, 2006: On June 1 Soka Gakkai representatives donated US$30,000 (3,300,000 yen) to the Embassy of the Republic of Indonesia in Japan for earthquake relief following the severe quake which hit Central Java on May 27.
The day after the quake, Soka Gakkai International (SGI) Indonesia members in Yogyakarta formed a motor bike team in cooperation with local residents to deliver relief supplies to affected areas which had not yet received government assistance. In addition, members in the Central Javan city of Semarang have collected basic necessities such as food, water and sanitary supplies and sent them by truck to Yogyakarta. SGI Indonesia is continuing to collect donations and relief supplies.
Soka Gakkai International is a lay Buddhist association with over 12 million members around the world. Its relief activities and educational initiatives to promote peace, culture and education are part of the longstanding tradition of Buddhist humanism.
