Updates and reports from around the world
From January 17-19, SGI-Europe held a leaders' summit at the newly opened Milan Ikeda Peace Culture Center, located in Corsico, on the outskirts of Milan. Some 200 leaders from 31 countries across Europe attended.
The summit was led by Hideaki Takahashi, Chairman of SGI-Europe, and Suzanne Pritchard, European Women's leader.
At the summit, representatives from Croatia, Belgium, the Netherlands and Romania shared reports of their efforts and contributions to the development of their local SGI organizations and communities. The year's activity plans were also discussed, and it was decided to focus on enhancing discussion meetings at the local level and deepening members' understanding of Nichiren Buddhism through study sessions and training courses.
SGI President Daisaku Ikeda sent a congratulatory message to the summit, expressing his conviction that Nichiren Buddhism can contribute to creating the foundation of lasting peace in the world. He stated that he hoped all SGI members in Europe would strive to emulate Nichiren Daishonin's spirit, prove the power of faith in their daily life and be victorious in life.
The opening ceremony of the new Milan Ikeda Peace Culture Center was held on January 1 and was attended by some 900 members from throughout Italy. A 16th-century building called the Cascina Guardia di Sopra in the grounds of the new center is being refurbished and will be used for prayer meetings and administrative purposes. The new center will serve as the main meeting place for SGI members in Italy and Europe as a whole.
