On May 29, a delegation of 25 students and faculty from China's Peking University (PKU) visited Taiwan Soka Association (TSA)'s Zhi Shan Culture Center in Taipei for a friendship exchange with TSA student group members.
The delegation was led by Ran Cao, chairperson of the Department of Student Associations of the PKU Youth League Committee. Some 150 TSA student members also attended, including Lu Yi Hsiao, director of TSA's Academic Department.
This event took place nearly 40 years to the day that then Soka Gakkai President Daisaku Ikeda first visited China (May 30, 1974). It is one of more than ten exchanges that have taken place between TSA and Peking University since 1999.
At the exchange, the youth shared their aspirations and determinations for the future. A group of TSA student members gave a dance performance that was reciprocated by Peking University students, who also performed traditional Chinese music on the erhu, a two-stringed bowed instrument, and pipa, a Chinese lute. The Peking University students also gave an a capella performance.
Mr. Ran expressed his desire for youth to continue these cross-strait friendship exchanges and take the lead in passing on bonds of goodwill to the younger generation. As inspiration in this endeavor, he cited the friendship between former Chinese Premier Zhou Enlai and Mr. Ikeda who met in December 1974 during the latter's second visit to China.
At the end of June, some 30 TSA student group members also travelled to China to attend Peking University's Summer School from June 29 to August 1.
Prior to beginning their summer school studies, on June 23, the TSA youth visited Nankai University in Tianjing and attended a forum with the university's Zhou Enlai and Daisaku Ikeda Research Group where they discussed the importance of cross-strait exchanges, education and peace. They also visited Beijing Normal University and Tsinghua University.
