From May to July, SGI and the Earth Charter International's joint exhibition "Seeds of Hope: Visions of sustainability, steps toward change" (SOH) was shown at five educational institutions in Venezuela and Chile.
On June 3, SGI-Venezuela (SGIV) was invited to open SOH at the Caribbean Maritime Experimental National University (UMC) in the state of Vargas as part of their "environmental week" activities aimed at raising environmental awareness on campus.
UMC Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Miguel Darío Piñango and representatives from the Ministry of the Environment were among those who attended the exhibition opening. In his speech, Dr. Piñango stated that the exhibition served as an important tool enabling participants to realize that they too can be agents of environmental preservation. Representing SGIV, Dougerma Ramirez explained the history of SGI's efforts to raise awareness on environmental issues through initiatives such as SOH.
Titled "For Future Generations," UMC's environmental week activities also included video showings, workshops, dance therapy and games with an ecological theme.
SOH was also displayed at two other universities in Venezuela: on May 14 and 21, small-sized versions of the panels were shown at the University Institute of Agro-Industrial Technology of Táchira (IUTAI) in Táchira State; and from June 17-21 the full-sized exhibition was on display at the National Experimental Polytechnic University of the Armed Forces (UNEFA) in Guárico State.
In Chile, the Seeds of Hope exhibition was shown from June 17-29 at the University of Concepción (UDEC) in Concepción City and from July 2-13 at the Austral University of Chile (UACh) in Valdivia City. In both locations the exhibition was viewed by over 1,000 people, including students from local schools, teachers and other members of the surrounding community.
"Seeds of Hope" was launched in 2010 as a successor to the "Seeds of Change" exhibition created for the World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2002.
