Updates and reports from around the world
At the end of 2012, the new Soka Culture Center was opened in Tokyo. It was officially opened to visitors on a ticketed basis from January. The building, located near the Soka Gakkai Headquarters in Shinanomachi, serves as a meeting and exhibition space and consists of 8 floors, all offering barrier-free accessibility.
A key innovation of the center is its extensive digital exhibitions, housed on the third floor. Through various touchscreen and interactive panels using multimedia technology, visitors can learn about the history of the SGI, its development in Japan and around the world, and view a compilation of footage of SGI President Ikeda encouraging members and holding dialogues with leading figures from around the world.
There is also a theater with 200-inch screens where people can enjoy a virtual tour of SGI centers in various countries.
Currently, an exhibition titled "SGI President Daisaku Ikeda--Inspiring Courage and Hope" is on display on the fifth floor, with over 700 items representing milestones in Mr. Ikeda's journey for peace. Included are his calligraphy brushes and notebooks containing his impressions of lectures given by his mentor, second Soka Gakkai president Josei Toda.
The fourth and sixth floors provide meeting rooms seating 250 and 1,000 people respectively. Lastly, a spacious lounge area on the second floor provides a place for visitors to rest, including a play room for children and a feeding room for mothers.
The Soka Gakkai's new central headquarters building that is being constructed nearby is due for completion by November 18 of this year.
