The "Seeds of Change: The Earth Charter and Human Potential" exhibition came to Lawrence Kansas from April 17-24, 2008, where it was on show at the Lawrence Arts Center. Gallery Director Rick Mitchell was impresssed by the exhibition's dynamic design and international perspective. As a result of this event, the arts center has decided to introduce more environmentally themed exhibitions.
Community activist Beth Schultz, professor emeritus of English at the University of Kansas, organized a series of presentations by various community groups concerned about the environment held in a local park the week before Earth Day, April 22. The local SGI-USA group participated in this event through reading from the Earth Charter and performing a song about spring.
Annual Earth Day Parade was held on April 19. Local SGI-USA members promoted the exhibit and held dialogues with people who came to their booth at the Earth Day festival in the park. Many people asked about the "Seeds of Change" exhibition and how they could get involved in their communities through an exhibit like this. Local SGI-USA leader Mark Jones, a champion of environmental consciousness, coordinated the exhibition showing. He commented, "For the past three years we have participated in the Earth Day celebrations and each year it has been bigger and better and more challenging but the rewards are also great."
