Carabobo University, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, conferred its highest honor, the "Alejo Zuloaga Award," on SGI President Daisaku Ikeda for his contributions to peace and nonviolence through cultural exchanges and dialogues. Carabobo University, located in Valencia, Carabobo State, was founded in 1982 as Valencia University. Dr. Alejo Zuloaga Egusquiza was a distinguished Venezuelan lawyer, educator and the university's founder and first rector. With a belief that an educator's responsibility is fostering children's ability to think and not just providing knowledge, Dr. Zuloaga contributed to the country's educational development and to building a civil society, while fighting against a dictatorship that oppressed the people.
The conferral took place on January 26 at the university's library, during the opening of Morehouse College's "Gandhi, King, Ikeda (GKI): A Legacy of Building Peace" exhibition. Over 200 guests attended, including Carabobo University Rector María Luisa Aguilar de Maldonado, Vice Rector Jessy Divo de Romero and faculty. Rector Aguilar presented a certificate and commemorative medal to SGI-Venezuela General Director Remén E. Regalado, who received it on Mr. Ikeda's behalf. Ms. Aguilar stated that the honor recognized Mr. Ikeda's dedication to building a democratic society based on peace and nonviolence.
