| Singapore Soka Association Assists Relief Activities for Cyclone Victims in Myanmar |
The cyclone that hit Myanmar on May 3, 2008 has left tens of thousands dead and many more suffering from hunger and lack of potable water. Singapore Soka Association (SSA) has responded by assisting relief efforts organized by Mercy Relief, a Singapore-based organization promoting humanitarian relief and development projects in Asia.
At the SSA Soka Youth Center on May 9, some 30 SSA volunteers worked throughout the day to pack 40 boxes of relief goods purchased by Mercy Relief that included tents, water purification tablets and medical supplies, and prepared them for shipment.

SSA General Director Ong Bon Chai commented, "SSA has a close working relationship with Mercy Relief. We embarked on a joint relief program during the 2004 tsunami disaster and cooperated in assisting orphanages in Cambodia. SSA's efforts to help those in need are a natural expression of our Buddhist compassion."
SSA also began a fund drive on May 9 for monetary donations by setting up collection booths at the SSA Headquarters and the Senja Soka Center. The drive is expected to end on May 18 and all funds collected will be forwarded to Mercy Relief to help cyclone victims in Myanmar.
