"Victor Hugo and the Romanticists" Exhibition to Open in Hokkaido
"Victor Hugo and the Romanticists" exhibition, currently showing at the Tokyo Fuji Art Museum, Hachioji, Tokyo, will move to the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. The exhibition features 500 items belonging to the Victor Hugo House of Literature, as well as six national treasures of France, shown in Japan for the first time. Highlighted are Hugo's indomitable struggles championing social justice, based on a deep love of humanity. The French writer's spiritual legacy is presented through original manuscripts, proof galleys, photographs, letters, and writing paraphernalia. Also presented are memorabilia of two of Hugo's peers, Alexandre Dumas Sr. (1802-1870) and French composer Hector Berlioz (1803-1869), as well as paintings by Romanticists of Hugo's era.

[The exhibition in Hokkaido will run from January 26 through February 20, 2005. Museum hours: 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Closed on Mondays. Admission fee: adults--1,000 yen; high school and college students--600 yen; and junior high and elementary school students, 400 yen. ]
