SGI-Portugal Grows to Four Chapters
SGI-Portugal members at recent general meeting
On October 23, SGI-Portugal held a general meeting in Lisbon to commemorate its 40th anniversary. Since SGI President Daisaku Ikeda first visited Portugal on October 27, 1965, the organization has developed, based on his encouragement to engage in activities and exchanges infused with the spirit of human diplomacy. The 300 members who gathered from throughout Portugal have all challenged to win in their personal lives, based on the life-affirming philosophy of Nichiren Buddhism.

SGI-Europe Chair Shoichi Hasegawa announced the organization's growth to one headquarters and four chapters, as well as new headquarters leaders, as follows: Chief--Sueji Naohara; Women's (WD) leader--Hiroko Azevedo; Secretariat--Rui Manuel Lopes Graca; Youth (YD) Leader--Etsuko Motoki; Young Men's (YMD) Leader--Mario Barba Sanchez; and Young Women's (YWD) Leader--Sofia Ferreira Soromenho. In a message, Mr. Ikeda called on the SGI-Portugal members to advance in high spirits and on friendly terms with one another, based on the spirit of "many in body, one in mind." Following words by new leaders and a women's chorus performance, SGI-Europe Vice Women's Chair Betty Mori quoted from Nichiren's writings, "Letter to Kyo'o," and asked those present to challenge to establish an unshakable happiness in their lives with the "heart of a lion king." Mr. Hasegawa called on everyone to shine a light of hope in society, manifesting the spirit of Nichiren Buddhism.
