SGI President - Daisaku Ikeda

Daisaku Ikeda is the president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist association of more than 12 million members in 190 countries and territories, and founder of several educational, cultural and research institutions.
He is a prolific writer, poet and peace activist, recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Buddhism, bringing its timeless wisdom to bear on the many contemporary issues confronting humanity.

On May 6, 2007, SGI President Daisaku Ikeda received his 500th honorary citizenship from a municipality. On the occasion of an SGI-Taiwan Community Friendship Culture Festival at a school in Tucheng, Taipei County, Mayor Lu Jia-chen presented an honorary citizenship from Tucheng to Mr. Ikeda in recognition of his initiatives in the areas of peace, culture and education. Mayor Lu lauded SGI-Taiwan's young people participating in the festival, saying they have inspired fellow citizens with hope for a bright future. An SGI-Taiwan representative received the honor on Mr. Ikeda's behalf. With this award, to date Mr. Ikeda has been named an honorary citizen of 500 cities. On the same day, SGI-Taiwan Community Friendship Culture Festivals were held at 35 other venues.
