Daisaku Ikeda is the president of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist association of more than 12 million members in 190 countries and territories, and founder of several educational, cultural and research institutions.

He is a prolific writer, poet and peace activist, recognized as one of the leading interpreters of Buddhism, bringing its timeless wisdom to bear on the many contemporary issues confronting humanity.

Baikal National University of Economics and Law, Irkutsk, Russia Honors SGI President

On March 13, 2007, a delegation from Baikal National University of Economics and Law (BNUEL), headed by Rector Mikhail Vinokurov, presented Soka University founder Daisaku Ikeda with an honorary professorship from the Russian university, at the Soka University campus in Hachioji, Tokyo. Soka University President Masami Wakae received the award on behalf of Mr. Ikeda at a ceremony attended by student representatives from Soka University and Soka Women's College. In his citation, Rector Vinokurov remarked that the BNUEL Professorship Council made a unanimous decision to confer Mr. Ikeda an honorary professorship in recognition of his longstanding commitment to building friendship between Russia and Japan and for his efforts to forge educational, cultural and academic ties between the two countries. During the past 30 years, various initiatives proposed by Mr. Ikeda have culminated in the establishment of educational exchange programs between students and professors of several Russian universities and Soka University and cultural exchanges through exhibitions and visits by performing art groups.

The Baikal National University of Economics and Law, located in Irkutsk near Lake Baikal, has 16 faculties including finance, international law, journalism and personnelmanagement. Student enrollment, including correspondence students, is 18,000.
