On March 21, 2010, SGI-Kenya youth members in Nairobi organized a community friendship festival at a public venue in the city. The event included performances by SGI youth along with young people from local cultural and educational organizations. The festivities included dancing, singing and drumming. SGI-Kenya young men have also been active in community clean-up endeavors as well as tree plantings.
SGI-South Africa (SGI-SA) is engaged in the "Victory Over Violence" campaign and other initiatives to promote nonviolence. The organization has developed close ties with several groups working to preserve the legacy of Gandhi in South Africa. In September 2006, in partnership with the Gandhi Development Trust, SGI-SA was involved in commemorative events in Johannesburg and Cape Town marking the 100th anniversary of the start of Gandhi's satyagraha movement, and in January 2010, SGI-SA was awarded the Gandhi Remembrance Award by the Gandhi Remembrance Association. In 2007, SGI-SA held a special tribute to antiapartheid hero Steve Biko to commemorate the 30th anniversary of his death with an event entitled "My Revolution--Revealing the Jewel Within" that featured original poetry, storytelling and dance.
